Pre-draft, the Browns already had three QBs: Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel. The Cleveland Browns’ decision to add another quarterback, Taylen Green, has made the QB room crowded.
92.3 The Fans host Anthony Lima has been vocal with his criticism of this decision. He seems to be skeptical of Green’s trajectory within the team and feels that the Browns would be wasting his talents if they limit him to a QB position.
“It’s a completely wasted pick if he’s trying to be a QB. It can be an awesome steal of a pick if they can convert him to a great athlete who can be a great redzone weapon,” The Dawgs reported in an X post on 27 April.
Watson, 30, is the most experienced starter on the Browns’ existing roster. He is set to make a comeback in the 2026 season after being cleared to play from his Achilles injuries.
During the voluntary minicamp at Berea, Dillon Gabriel also made his first appearance since his rookie season ended in Week 10 with a concussion.
Sanders, who did not have an exceptional season, still showed great potential as well. He was the Rookie of the Week in Week 14 for his three-touchdown performance against the Titans.
He also played his first-ever Pro Bowl that season. He gained 1,400 yards, a franchise-high in 2025, and threw seven touchdowns. And the Browns ended the 2025 season with a 5-12 record. Which leads to the question: Was Green a required pick?
The Browns have primarily picked players to strengthen their offense. The 23-year-old QB from Arkansas was the 182nd overall pick of this year. Although he is the only quarterback in the draft class, Green's athleticism can be expanded for a different position in the primary.
At the NFL Combine in February, Green completed the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds. This was the fastest a QB has run since 2003. He also set a new record with a 43.5-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-2-inch broad jump, surpassing Anthony Richardson’s 2023 display.
Green’s standing in the team remains undecided. Both general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Todd Monken have admitted there are no concrete plans for him. This could allow a transition from the QB position, allowing the Browns to use him as a "great red zone weapon".
QBs Who Transitioned Into Other Offensive Positions
If Green does consider playing another position, he does not need to go far for an example. Terrelle Pryor Sr., a former NFL player, started as a QB for the Las Vegas Raiders and converted to a wide receiver for the Browns. In 2016, he recorded over 1000 receiving yards.
Julian Edelman played as a QB at Kent State before being drafted by the New England Patriots in 2009. He was a career Patriot and wide receiver who went on to become the Super Bowl LIII MVP.
Closer to home, Matt Jones was an Arkansas QB, too, and a WR for the Jacksonville Jaguars. At the 2005 NFL Combine, he reportedly completed the 40-yard dash in 4.37 and 4.38 seconds.
So while Lima’s review of Green is harsh, the new possibilities could unfold. What are your thoughts?
