"Closer than he’s ever been" - Browns insider makes major Deshaun Watson claim

The Cleveland Browns have won three straight games, giving the team a new feel after a difficult opening week. Deshaun Watson has delivered credible performances as Cleveland has climbed to 3-1.

Watson has posted 238 yards and two touchdowns against Tampa Bay, 144 yards and two scores against Carolina, then 268 yards and a touchdown against Pittsburgh. His recent production has added another dimension to Cleveland’s turnaround.

Speaking on ESPN Cleveland, Browns insider Tony Grossi was asked what had sparked the team’s turnaround. He credited Todd Monken for getting more out of Watson and helping him rediscover his previous level:

“I think you have to give it to Monken. I mean, because he's pulled the good games out of Watson. He's closer than he's ever been to the Houston Watson. And the team just seems to play for him harder than they've ever played for anyone.”

Grossi’s assessment ties Watson’s improvement directly to Monken’s influence. It also highlights the coach’s impact on the wider team.

Todd Monken has changed the Browns’ approach

Todd Monken has overseen three consecutive victories after Cleveland dropped its opener to Jacksonville. The Browns then defeated Tampa Bay and Carolina before edging Pittsburgh 27-24 on Thursday night.

Deshaun Watson completed 24 of 33 passes for 268 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Pittsburgh. He also led the late drive that set up Andre Szmyt’s winning 56-yard field goal.

The three victories support Tony Grossi’s assessment. Cleveland has found ways to win close games while Watson continues to grow within Monken’s offense.
