The Cleveland Browns' quarterback controversy has dominated the conversation heading into the new season. Browns fans wanted Shedeur Sanders to take over as QB1, while Deshaun Watson has faced plenty of criticism from supporters.

That frustration was evident during the preseason. Watson was repeatedly booed by Browns fans, even before the starting quarterback decision was made. Despite all that, Cleveland radio host Tony Rizzo is now hoping Watson can succeed.

"It would be one of the best stories of the week 1 in the NFL for him to come out and play well and get a win, I'd love to see it."

Rizzo's stance is interesting considering the tension surrounding Watson. However, his reasoning is simple. When everything is said and done, nothing matters more than the Browns winning football games.

If Watson can deliver in the season opener, perhaps some of the hostility will finally begin to fade. For now, though, plenty of Browns fans will be waiting to see whether he can prove them wrong.

Browns HC Todd Monken Stands By His Decision to Name Deshaun Watson QB1

Monken has faced significant criticism since naming Watson his starter. However, the Browns head coach has made it clear that he understands why fans are frustrated with the decision. He also accepts that supporters have every right to express those feelings.

At the same time, Monken isn't allowing the noise to influence his decision. He believes the coaching staff must make the choices it feels are best for the team, and Watson is currently that choice.

So as mentioned earlier, Watson now has an opportunity to silence the criticism. If he plays well and starts winning games, the controversy could quickly become an afterthought.

If he struggles, however, the pressure on Monken will only intensify.
