Chiefs Star Rashee Rice Faces Charges Over Probation Violation

The Kansas City Chiefs' 2023 draft second-round pick, wide receiver Rashee Rice, might have to miss the OTAs. Rice, reportedly, is in custody for violating the terms of his probation. He now has to serve 30 days of j*** time.

"The Texas State Attorney's Office said Tuesday that Rice was ordered to go to j*** immediately as part of his original 30-day sentence for the third-degree felony of racing and causing bodily injury," reported ESPN on May 19.

A Dallas County court order dated May 19 booked Rice for testing positive for T** and will keep the wide receiver in custody till June 16. During this time, he will miss the Chiefs’ OTAs (May 26-28 and June 1-3) and the mandatory minicamp from June 9 to June 11.

As per Carter Bahns of CBS Sports, Rice was involved in a high-speed hit-and-run car crash along Dallas’ North Central Expressway in March 2024. He was erratically driving his Lamborghini Urus at nearly 120 mph when he struck a retaining wall and caused a chain reaction collision, which damaged five other vehicles.

Rice then reportedly left the scene without checking on the occupants of the other vehicles. He turned himself in weeks later after an arrest warrant was issued against him.

The charges in the warrant were of one count of aggravated a******, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injuries.

Bahns further added that a Dallas County judge sentenced Rice to 30 days in j*** and five years of probation in July 2025. Rice had the choice to serve j*** time anytime during the five years. However, with him violating probation rules by testing positive for T**, he will have to serve j*** time now.

The NFL earlier suspended Rice without pay for the first six games of the 2025 season. According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the NFL acknowledged being “aware of the report” while choosing not to comment further.

With his recent knee surgery and custody time, Rice will be missing team workouts and is reported to be back after two months if he’s able to recover fully while serving his sentence.

Rashee Rice’s Needed Medical Intervention Before the Sentence

A week before being ordered to serve his j***-term, Rice underwent a cleanup surgery in his right knee to remove loose debris that was causing inflammation. The Chiefs’ concern is about the medical attention and rehab, which the wide receiver may not be able to get now at the Dallas County j***.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Rice hurt his knee during a collision with Patrick Mahomes in September 2024 during the game against the Los Angeles Chargers. What was first considered an ACL tear turned out to be a torn LCL, a damaged tendon, and a PCL.

There wasn’t any structural damage to the knee, but surgery was needed to eradicate the discomfort Rice was facing. Rice headed for the surgery without knowing that he would be sentenced soon for violating the terms of his probation.

Sources concluded by saying that Rice will most likely be sidelined for two months but is expected to be back for training camp later this summer.
