Cancer-Free Randy Moss Shares Health Update as NFL Legend Prepares Next Career Move
NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss has found an off-the-field calling following remission from his rare bile duct cancer last fall.
The WR with the second-most touchdown receptions in NFL history (156) is now into freshwater bass fishing. Moss revealed his next career move after spending nine months undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.
“I had to take a year off to be able to get myself back right, but my health is great,” said Moss in conversation with The Associated Press. “I still have my quarterly checkups every four months, my scans, but I just think that now that I’m back outside, this is one of the things that I couldn’t wait to see...I have the bass waiting on me, so I’m just a kid in the candy store having fun, man.”

The Associated Press added that fishing for freshwater bass has become a third career for Moss after his work as an NFL analyst for ESPN, which he resumed in 2025.
Per the AP report, Moss was recently hired by World Bass Enterprises as their ambassador for “The Champions” tournament this fall in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The championship-level professional bass fishing event is scheduled for October 28 to November 1 this year.
The WBE was founded earlier this year by Texas entrepreneur and amateur angler Brian Bird, who has become Moss’ fishing buddy. Bird’s goal through the event is to produce the highest-quality bass fishing event the sport has ever seen.
Meanwhile, Moss has kept himself busy filming “Chasing 10”, a documentary series, with his business partner, Andrew Grein. The series features Moss fishing with celebrity guests in pursuit of the 10-pound largemouth bass.
Moss concluded by saying that his third career traces back to his childhood days spent fishing and casting lines alongside his older brother.
Moss Reflects on His Fishing Journey Origin That Began Before the NFL
During the interview, Moss revealed that his brother, Eric Moss, who passed away in 2019, first taught him how to cast a line while growing up in West Virginia.
Moss shared that after starting his NFL journey with the Minnesota Vikings in 1998, he was introduced to the late John Laub, who was a professional angler. Moss learned more about the sport from Laub on the St. Croix River alongside the Wisconsin border.
“My first actual bass experience, I caught 20,” revealed Moss. “John, he was glowing. That’s the man who showed me bass fishing and I haven’t looked back since."
According to Rodney Knuppel of Athlon Sports, Moss called bass fishing his passion, hobby, and therapy. His “Chasing 10” series supports efforts aimed at creating safer treatments and better futures for children suffering from cancer.
Moss concluded his interview with AP, saying that he’s auctioning off a custom-made boat during each season. The proceeds will go to the Children’s Cancer Research Fund in Minnesota.
