Browns TE earns praise from head coach Todd Monken amid training camp

The headlines may belong to KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, but Harold Fannin Jr. has quietly emerged as one of camp's biggest talking points.

Recently, while speaking to the media, Monken was asked about Fannin's development this offseason. The head coach had nothing but praise for the tight end, highlighting his ability to gain yards after contact.

“[Fannin] looked really good last week. And he's still a young player, still a developing player, but what a great mindset," Monken said on August 2.

On Monday, Fannin made his presence felt, hauling in four catches during team drills, with several coming in traffic across the middle after emphasising that aspect of his game during individual work.

His ability to execute at full speed is the reason Todd Monken was full of praise for him while speaking to the media, as per Dylan Feltovich's
Browns Wire report
.

“[Fannin] wants to be better, works awfully hard… One thing I did not know that I saw last year is his yards after contact. I didn't see that at Bowling Green; maybe I didn't study hard enough, but he is hard to tackle,” said Monken.

Fannin Jr. shined brighter than ever on Monday, delivering another productive outing. He opened with a reception from Deshaun Watson over the middle before later connecting with Dillon Gabriel.

Not only that, he won a contested catch against Daniel Thomas and adjusted to secure a red-zone reception over Ronnie Hickman.

Returning from offseason surgery after his rookie year ended with a groin injury, Fannin Jr. appears fully healthy.

His impressive performances have caught the head coach's attention and reinforced his role on the team.

Todd Monken sends clear message on Harold Fannin Jr.’s role

Last year, the 22-year-old hauled in 72 catches for 731 yards and six touchdowns, finishing among the top eight NFL tight ends in receiving yards.

His production gave the Browns enough confidence to part ways with David Njoku this offseason.

Now that he is back from surgery, Todd Monken has clarified Harold Fannin Jr.'s role for the Browns this season.

"As [Fannin] develops his route running skills, I wouldn't say he's a 'matchup guy' yet," Monken stated, per Brownswire in the same report as above. "I think he's going to continue to develop as a blocker, but if you get him the ball, he's a hard guy to bring down."

The team has high expectations for him, and after making a name for himself during his rookie season, Todd Monken expects him to work his magic again this season. The question is: Will he be able to?
