Browns Suffer Major Blow to Future Plans at NFL Owner's Meetings
Andrew Berry’s attempt at securing the Cleveland Browns’ future has tanked. They have now withdrawn their proposal for trading draft picks with a five-year window, instead of the current three-year one. Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay was confident that the Browns would be dealt this tough reality.
On Monday, Browns expert Kay Adams, host of the Up and Adams show, asked him how he felt about the Browns' idea. The Rams head coach shot down all hopes and said, “There’s zero percent chance that’ll get through.
“Yeah, I respect the courage for Andrew to have a very sound reasoning of what’s behind it. If there’s one thing you can bet Vegas odds on, there’s no chance that thing’s getting through.”
Initially, this proposal saw some support, including one voice that came from the Rams camp. GM Kevin Demoff said on X that the idea "makes so much sense," because of the number of picks that could be traded. But McVay, who is a member of the NFL Competition Committee, said that they were 11-0 against the idea.
"I'm not backing that," he told Adams.
The Browns reasoned that this would “provide clubs with greater roster-building flexibility.” Berry argued that managers could be creative in trade structures and boost overall trade market activity. Now, they will have to settle with the current rules in practice.
But Why Did the Browns Propose This Rule to Begin With?
Upon announcing this proposal, many rushed to conclude that Berry was “desperate” to save his job. He and the Browns are cleaning up the fallout from the disastrous $230 million Deshaun Watson trade, which cost them three picks. In 2021, Berry brought in Watson with a guaranteed five-year contract and expected Watson would reap the same results he did for the Houston Texans.
But unfortunately for him, Watson played in only 19 games after sustaining injuries.
While he is returning in 2026 and bringing new challenges with him for the offence, there is another player who shaped this proposal – Myles Garrett.
Many experts believe Berry is trying to have access to as many options as possible once Myles Garrett is inevitably traded. The NFL record holder and Browns’ star has been a constant name in the trade rumor mill for a while now. And his recently restructured contract makes him “actually tradable” despite Berry’s declaration that Garrett is a “career Brown.”
Berry might just have to live as the man who made one of the worst trade decisions in NFL history. Since his attempts to change it are fizzling away. What do you think of this development?
