The Cleveland Browns’ decision to start Deshaun Watson has drawn criticism, with another analyst delivering a brutal verdict.

Speaking on Yahoo Sports Daily, John Fanta questioned Cleveland’s choice to open the season with Watson after his struggles with the team.

Fanta believes Cleveland fans are not demanding spectacular play. Instead, he argued that average production would be enough to make supporters happy.

“The one fanbase that would cheer you for being average is Cleveland fans, and you haven't even been close to that,” Fanta said.

In a brutal verdict, Fanta took it up a notch further:

“The writing's on the wall with this guy. He's no longer an NFL-level quarterback. The only reason why he's starting Game 1 is because it's on the road and the Browns spent $230 million and are having one last attempt at getting any dollar's worth.”

The Browns will desperately hope their QB1 can return to form after missing the entire 2025 season while recovering from an Achilles injury.

Deshaun Watson could have a short leash if he cannot give the Browns what they need. The veteran has struggled since arriving in Cleveland, while injuries have limited his availability.

John Fanta’s criticism goes beyond Watson’s production, with the analyst questioning whether the QB is still at an NFL level and suggesting Cleveland’s $230 million investment is driving the decision to start him.

Shedeur Sanders’ presence already adds pressure on Watson, and should the veteran fail, the Browns could turn to the 24-year-old to take his place as QB1.

Watson remains the starter, but his margin for error is small.
