Browns Reportedly Will Ditch Dillon Gabriel in Favor of Rookie in QB Battle
The Cleveland Browns are dealing with a really crowded QB room. It looks like second-year player Dillon Gabriel might actually lose his roster spot to a brand-new rookie, Taylen Green.
"Green is a rare athlete who will be developed as a quarterback and potentially used as a runner in certain situations," Zac Jackson of The Athletic reported May 26. "It seems likely that he will be given a chance to stick as the No. 3 quarterback."
The Browns currently have four QBs on their roster, led by projected QB1 Deshaun Watson. Shedeur Sanders is next in line, while league chatter suggests Dillon Gabriel may be traded. According to Jackson, his spot will be taken by Green.

Taylen Green just brings a totally different level of pure athleticism to the table. His NFL Combine numbers were insane, where he weighed in at 227 pounds at a height of 6'6".
Green posted a 4.36-second 40-yard dash, the 2nd fastest time for Quarterbacks in NFL Combine history. He also set an NFL Combine QB record with his 43.5-inch vertical jump and 11'2" broad jump.
But during the first open OTA practice, Green's role was limited to two-spot work. According to Jackson, he will have to earn his reps.
"Green will have to prove he’s worthy of getting more than a few practice reps at a time, but he’ll likely get the chance to play in at least one of the preseason games and against the No. 1 defense in some scout-team situations," Jackson added.
Thanks to Green's athletic gifts, the Browns can build short-yardage or red-zone plays specifically for him.
Why Dillon Gabriel Is Slipping Down the Browns Depth Chart
Dillon Gabriel had an amazing college run, with 3,857 passing yards and 30 touchdowns in his final year at Oregon.
Gabriel's ceiling, however, isn't limited to his technical traits. He is the exact opposite of Taylen. At 5'11" and 205 pounds, his physical frame doesn't offer all kinds of possibilities that Taylen Green's size and speed do.
In 2025, Gabriel played in 10 games for the Browns. He managed to throw for 937 passing yards, hitting seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He completed 59.5% of his pass attempts.
Because of his smaller build, draft analysts and scouts generally viewed Dillon Gabriel as a solid backup quarterback at best in the NFL. They weren't touting him to be a regular starter on any roster.
