Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam Predicted to Make Major Deshaun Watson Decision
The Cleveland Browns' decision to give Deshaun Watson a fully guaranteed $230 million contract once looked like a costly mistake. After years of inconsistent performances and injuries, expectations surrounding the quarterback entering this season were exceptionally low.
However, Watson has exceeded those modest expectations. Through seven games, he has thrown for 1,482 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. His recent performances have helped Cleveland build a 5-2 record, putting his future back in the spotlight.
Against the Tennessee Titans, Watson completed 25 of 36 passes for 308 yards. He also scored a rushing touchdown as Cleveland secured a dramatic 27-24 victory.
Not long ago, fans were questioning why owner Jimmy Haslam had invested so heavily in Watson. Now, the conversation has shifted toward whether Cleveland might consider extending his stay.
In fact, NFL insider Mike Garafolo believes Haslam could cut another check, extending Deshaun Watson.
"Day in and day out. He was putting that work in there. So you've got a scenario potentially in the near future where Jimmy Haslam is going to write another check potentially. I mean, that's the conversation that we are inching toward, and I understand that a lot of folks are going to be rolling their eyes, and that'll make them uncomfortable. But that is a reality."
Garafolo's comments suggest Watson's resurgence has complicated what once appeared to be an inevitable departure. However, a new deal remains speculation, and Cleveland's decision will depend on how the quarterback performs going forward.
Deshaun Watson Leaves Browns Fans Divided With His Resurgence
Despite Watson's improved performances, another contract would remain a controversial decision. Some fans believe Cleveland should avoid repeating its previous financial gamble, while others see reasons to reconsider his future.
For Haslam, the challenge is deciding whether Watson's revival represents lasting progress or a temporary turnaround.
