Browns Legend Bernie Kosar Shares Health Update After Liver Transplant
Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar was recently a part of The Dawgs podcast. The former quarterback touched upon many topics and also had his health update after his liver transplant surgery.
"Awesome. Healthwise, six and a half months post this transplant to be here today on a Saturday morning, being able to pretend bowl," said Kosar on the June 14 episode of the podcast when asked about joining the sit-down.
Kosar underwent a liver transplant a year and a half after being on the transplant list. Finally, on November 17, 2025, he received a new liver as he was suffering from severe cirrhosis. He received his liver from a 21-year-old donor.
Kosar then poked fun at himself about aging and declining physical ability, hinting at former Browns head coach Bill Belichick's remark about him while he was playing under him in Cleveland.
"They'll throw a couple token rocks down there with his bad flipper," the former quarterback said in the podcast. "[Bill] Belichick wasn't all off when he said diminishing skills. Okay. He's definitely diminishing bowling skills at 62. I actually was kind of good at bowling."

When Belichick came to Cleveland in 1991, Kosar was still the starter and finished a 6-10 season with the team. In 1992, Kosar’s playing time dropped significantly as Mike Tomczak took over most of the snaps, and by 1993, Kosar appeared in only seven games.
He was then released by Belichick, who cited Kosar's "diminishing skills" as the reason.
Now, years removed from the gridiron, Kosar's recovery process after the transplant was smooth. But he was recently readmitted to the hospital in early January 2026. This stemmed from a minor complication due to a slight rejection of his new organ.
The former quarterback spent the majority of his time with the Browns before playing for the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. He played 108 games in Cleveland, racking up 21,904 yards and 116 touchdowns.
Seeing Kosar in good health and in positive spirits is notable for many NFL fans. He was recently spotted spending time with a Kansas City Chiefs player.

Kosar was recently spotted by fans hanging out with Travis Kelce. It was a game of the Cleveland Guardians baseball team, which Kelce owns as a minority investor.
Though the game ended up getting postponed because of bad weather, the duo got to spend some time together.
"Despite the Cleveland Guardians' rainout, fun afternoon with Travis," shared Kosar on his Twitter handle.
Even though he has been fighting a health battle, he keeps track of the Browns. Kosar came up with a positive review for Cleveland quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
“I love his personality," said Kosar amidst brewing quarterback competition in Cleveland. "They don't like his personality. Are you crazy? It's one of the greatest, coolest personalities.”
Kosar is still remembered for helping Cleveland reach the playoffs for five straight seasons. Despite leading the team to three AFC Championship Games, he failed to win a Super Bowl with them. He won one with the Dallas Cowboys later.
