Browns' Latest QB Addition Has One Thing in Common With Lamar Jackson

With the 2026 NFL Draft coming to an end, the Cleveland Browns have utilized their 10 picks to address their several requirements, including a quarterback with their 182nd overall pick.

The Browns selected Taylen Green in the sixth round, adding him to the quarterback room with Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

During his post-draft press conference with the Browns, Green revealed he shared something common with the Baltimore Ravens' quarterback, Lamar Jackson.

“Me and Lamar played with the same OC, Bobby Petrino, in college. So he understands what Lamar is going through and just and how to get the best out of him,” Green stated.

Bobby Petrino coached both Taylen Green and Lamar Jackson during their collegiate careers. It was under his training that Jackson won the Heisman trophy in 2016 during his time as the quarterback for the Louisville Cardinals.

Petrino was also instrumental for Green's development during his time at Arkansas. His 2025 season under Petrino got him 2,714 yards, 19 touchdowns, combining 777 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns.

“Petrino’s knowledge of the game is second to none. He’s definitely hard on me and demands a lot. I’m definitely grateful to have the opportunity. I learned a lot just from the two years that I got to be coached by him,” Green said.

Green echoed similar feelings for Todd Monken, his new Browns coach. Again interestingly, Monken has also worked with Lamar before during his time at the Baltimore Ravens.

Green 'Excited' to Develop Under HC Monken

Browns' reporters asked Green about his thoughts about Browns’ coach Todd Monken and his previous work with other quarterbacks.

Green was visibly excited to work with the coach, saying he has followed his work, especially with Lamar Jackson.

“Todd Monkens’ resume is really deep and speaks for itself, what he did with Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, his best year in throwing the ball, just using his athletic ability. So I’m just grateful to do that in Cleveland,” Green stated.

Todd Monken was the Offensive Coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens from 2023 to 2025. Under his guidance, Lamar won his second MVP award in 2023.

Lamar saw his career-best offensive performance in 2024. He became the first player ever to throw 40 touchdowns with less than 5 interceptions in a single season. He became the only QB in NFL history with 90+ PFF as a runner and a passer.

Under Monken, Lamar evolved into an elite, pass-first QB with the numbers reflecting his progression. The Browns’ coach’s developmental strategy, paired with Petrino’s, is now shaping Green’s NFL career.

Green looks forward to compete for a roster spot behind Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and Deshaun Watson in the upcoming season.
