Browns Insider Reveals Why Deshaun Watson Might Be Browns' Starting QB

Deshaun Watson is all set to return to the field after an injury kept him away for a long time. A Browns Insider reignited his hopes of bagging the Browns’ starting quarterback spot.

Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns’ insider reporter, had a straightforward opinion on Watson getting an edge in the quarterback competition over Shedeur Sanders. With the Browns’ playing six of their initial nine games on the road, she considered one important factor that would make the head coach, Monken, prefer Watson over Sanders.

“I really believe that Todd Monken will choose his starting quarterback based on who gives the Browns the best chance to win, but if Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are really close down to the wire, the road-heavy early slate could be a factor,” replied Cabot to a query about the Browns’ starting QB.

Cabot further gave her reasoning for her pick, believing experience may triumph in this case.

“The Browns will field arguably the youngest offense in the NFL….. With so many young players, as well as five new starters on the offensive line, Monken might want a more experienced quarterback to help manage the game.”

Cabot was confident in her statement, stating that Watson is 7-0 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Browns’ week 1 opponent, and has “never lost in Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium”, the Buccaneers being the Browns’ week 2 opponent.

Earlier this week, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN also sided with Watson after reports stated that the QB looked and played like an “athletic Pro Bowl quarterback” and was “pretty darn athletic”.

“Watson will be a factor in the OTAs when they start going with first-team reps, second-team reps,” said Fowler. “So, he’s been a factor already on the practice field. I’m told he’s hit it off with Todd Monken, who’s got an offensive concept, some elements that Watson has run in the past and been his best at…”

If Monken announces Watson as QB1, this could be a befitting final bow for the three-time Pro Bowler and will solve Monken’s biggest challenge.

Todd Monken’s Biggest Challenge in the Browns’ Camp

Mary Kay Cabot addressed quite a few questions in her latest edition of Hey, Mary Kay! One question was about the biggest challenge Todd Monken will face as the team progresses through organized team activities and training camp in the summer.

Cabot answered by saying that Monken’s biggest challenge would be to pull together what will most likely be the youngest offense in the NFL. The offense is learning a whole new scheme and terminology, and training without even knowing who their QB1 is.

The Browns reporter concluded by saying that she hopes Monken will make his decision between Watson and Sanders as the team heads into organized activities this week.
