The Cleveland Browns' quarterback situation has sparked debate over Dillon Gabriel's place on the team. Even before the 2026 draft, Gabriel was likely to be the third-string quarterback, behind veteran Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.

Fans' confidence in Gabriel was further weakened following the Browns' drafting of Taylen Green in the sixth round. This prompted speculation that he may be released or traded. However, Browns insider Kay Cabot believes the Browns haven't given up on Gabriel.

"They’re not keeping Gabriel on the roster just to trade him. The new coaching staff has liked what it’s seen of him so far this offseason and believe he’s worth a longer look," Cabot stated.

"With Green on board, those two will essentially vie for the developmental spot, while Watson and Sanders battle for the starting job," Cabot explained.

Gabriel’s rookie season was a difficult one, as he led the team to a 1-5 record over six starts. His season ended early due to a concussion, which gave Shedeur Sanders the chance to step in.

With more quarterbacks being added to the roster, Gabriel finds himself in a high-pressure situation where he feels like he needs to prove his worth all over again.

However, the Browns have stated that they still value his presence. The team wants to keep him in the mix, no matter if he stays as a reliable backup.

The ultimate challenge for Cleveland will be managing all four players. Watson provides the veteran leadership, Sanders brings the star potential, Gabriel offers stability, and Green represents a project for the future.

While this depth gives the Browns plenty of options, it also creates a sense of unease. Sanders faces significant pressure to hold onto his spot at the top of the depth chart.

Todd Monken's Thoughts on the QB Situation

After the 2026 Draft, the spotlight in Cleveland has shifted onto the practice field. All eyes are on head coach Todd Monken, as he begins the high-stakes task of evaluating a revamped quarterback room.

During a recent press conference, Monken acknowledged  his observation regarding the quarterback situation.

"We just couldn't get past the draft and get right back to the quarterback, anybody got some Myles [Garrett] questions too while we're at it?" Monken joked regarding the reigning DPOY.

"I thought all three quarterbacks at times you could see, you know, the positives in their game and learning the new system and they've been awesome in the meeting rooms and on the field," Monken expressed

While Monken maintained a neutral stance, the battle for the starting position is far from settled.

Even though Sanders is currently seen as the frontrunner, the coaching staff hasn't made a final decision yet.

Under Monken's leadership, this ongoing competition for the starting quarterback spot will be the key factor in determining the team's success this season.
