Browns Insider Drops Positive Update on Shedeur Sanders

After the second day of the OTAs in the Browns camp, Browns’ insider Mary Kay Cabot provided positive reports about quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

During Cabot's Thursday appearance on the 92.3 The Fan show, she was asked if the quarterback competition had finally seen a worthy winner. Cabot had some good news for Browns fans who are waiting for Sanders to overpower quarterback Deshaun Watson.

“Deshaun did get more of the reps with the starters in those two-spotting periods. When it came to an important period later in the practice, Shedeur got a really nice choice drill where he was able to first man up in 11-on-11,” said Cabot on the show.

Cabot further added, “I thought that was a good sign for Shedeur in the competition. It wasn’t like ‘Deshaun’s getting everything.’ Shedeur still has an opportunity to come from behind and try to take this thing over, but just from the sheer optics of it, it looks like Deshaun is ahead.”

Cabot first reported in April that Watson might have the inside track to become the QB1 over Sanders. Ever since, analysts and fans have dug deeper into finding Monken’s confirmed choice for QB1.

Although the majority believes that Watson is in the lead, Cabot’s recent remarks have given Sanders supporters hope that the younger QB could also take the lead.

Cabot further shared on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast that the 11-on-11 OTA drills will play an influential role in deciding who Monken’s preference is for QB1.

“When you get to those precious 11-on-11, that’s when we’re really going to get some insight into who’s going first, where this thing is going and how it all stands,” she said on the podcast.

Mary Kay Cabot concluded by saying that Sanders showed some encouraging signs in the QB1 competition despite Watson being reported to be in the lead.

However, it wasn’t just Cabot from whom Sanders received appreciation, but also from the Browns' head coach, Todd Monken.

Coach Monken Praises Sanders for Improving at His Game

After the second OTA practice day, Browns head coach Todd Monken applauded Sanders for learning the new offensive system and applying it on the field.

He was particularly impressed by the difference in Sanders’ performance during the voluntary minicamp in April, compared to the first two days of the OTAs.

“Shedeur’s come miles, in terms of his progressions, getting the ball out, his understanding of concepts,” said Monken. “I think he’s really, really come a long way.”

Cabot reported that this could be one reason why Monken is insisting on the QB1 competition to play out. Sanders is “acclimating quickly” to the new scheme. At this pace, even though Watson is supposedly in the lead, anything can happen.

Monken said that by the end of this spring, he hopes to decide which quarterback has more potential to lead the Browns to victory.
