Browns Head Coach Candidate Likely to Snub Team to Follow John Harbaugh to the Giants

The Browns' hunt for John Harbaugh might be hurting them with not one but two blows.

Reports say that Harbaugh to the Giants is a done deal. Now, Dianna Russini of The Athletic has reported that someone who the Browns interviewed for HC will be following the former Ravens HC.

"Former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is expected to join John Harbaugh in New York with the Giants, per source. This has always been the plan."

The Browns had Monken on their radar, especially since he was their OC in 2019 when Baker Mayfield passed for what remains a career-high 3,827 yards.

This also comes after Monken said on the Ryan Ripken Show that, "I didn’t coach Lamar well enough. I didn’t have as good a relationship as I could have. I didn’t do the things we needed to do this year to win enough games to give ourselves a chance."

Monken was also one of the reasons why the Ravens fired Harbaugh, as per Russini.

"A key pressure point in the John Harbaugh dismissal, according to those familiar with today’s discussions, was his refusal to entertain any conversations about potentially moving on from offensive coordinator Todd Monken," she posted on X.

This reunion is great news for the Giants since in 2023-24, these two led the Ravens' offense to an elite level, with the unit ranking first in red zone TD pct. (67.9), rushing yards per game (172.1), yards per play (6.3), and total yards per game (397.6). But what does this mean for the Browns?

What does losing John Harbaugh and Monken leave the Browns with?

The Browns had interviewed a total of 6 candidates for the head coach position. Losing Monken means they are left with these 5:

  • Mike McDaniel - Former head coach, Miami Dolphins
  • Aden Durde - Defensive Coordinator, Seattle Seahawks
  • Dan Pitcher - Offensive Coordinator, Cincinnati Bengals
  • Jim Schwartz - Defensive Coordinator, Cleveland Browns
  • Tommy Rees - Offensive Coordinator, Cleveland Browns

As of recent reports, McDaniel is the frontrunner for the job because he has the potential to fix the Browns' offense. When he called the plays as Miami's HC, the team ranked sixth in total offense with an average of 364.5 yards per game in 2022 and first with 401.3 yards per game in 2023.
