The Cleveland Browns have wrapped up their OTAs, but the QB1 timeline. Head coach Todd Monken's latest comments suggest the Browns may not settle on a starter by season's start.

“In a perfect world, you’d love to have your starting quarterback, and you'd love to have your o-line set; I'm just not sure we'll be there,” Monken said on June 3, as reported by the Sporting News.

Monken's comments have left the QB debate at a crossroads, complicating what appeared to be Watson's clear lead.

Late in May, insider Mary Kay Cabot and ESPN senior writer Jeremy Fowler had reported the development within the Browns.

Watson, a three-time Pro Bowler, returned this season, his last with the Browns, after a lengthy Achilles injury absence, earning Monken's praise for his athleticism

Sanders, 24, on the other hand, threw interceptions in the 7-on-7 drills without a pass rush. An agitated Monken labeled “embarrassing” before praising Sanders, who has“come miles” in understanding the game. 

Sanders’ knowledge must have reflected well, since it led to a significant change on the grounds lately. After weeks of Watson leading the first-team drills, Sanders took over from him this week. 

“I felt there was a paradigm shift today in this whole thing I did,” said Cabot. “It just felt like things were different today.”

This turnout is different from her previous OTA report about Watson leading and her opinion that the Browns should declare him QB1. Monken does not have the QB1 answer yet.

The Browns are surrounded by uncertainty, but Monken's latest admission has sparked hope for a positive turnout.

Todd Monken Weighing In On Two “Starting-level Quarterbacks”

Fans needing the answer as to who, Deshaun Watson or Sheder Sanders, will definitely start this season, they have to wait a little longer.

“Every day I kind of lean one way or the other with quarterbacks,” head coach Todd Monken said. “But I'm fired up on the quarterbacks. I just tell you, we've got two starting-level quarterbacks. We really do.”

If Monken has found himself stuck in this situation, a conversation with two veterans might point him in the right direction. On June 4, the Browns hosted a special guest during their OTA No.9: Dabo Swinney.

According to reports, Monken spoke with Watson’s Clemson head coach that day. Monken is next up for a chat with Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s father and Colorado coach, about some coaching tips for his son.

“Can’t wait,” he said when asked about the meeting with Deion. 

Per Monken, both quarterbacks campaigning for the QB1 position are doing well. This leaves fans with the same unanswered question: is there truly a leader closer to the end goal?
