Browns Get Stern Warning After Missing out on Malik Willis

The Cleveland Browns' search for a quarterback just hit a wall. Target Malik Willis signed a massive deal with the Miami Dolphins, leaving the team empty-handed. And Browns Insider, Mary Kay Cabot, is not so happy with it. She said:

"I mean, at 22 and a half million dollars, I probably would have tried to outbid Miami for him. Because if you nail that position, then you're going to be set. And there's no guarantee that you're going to be in a position to draft one of the best quarterbacks next year...Because it certainly doesn't seem like, unless Shedeur Sanders turns out to be their franchise quarterback, you know, they kind of have to hope that that's going to work out that way."

Sanders has yet to show the potential of a good quarterback. He had a passer rating of 68.1 with 1,400 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 8 games in 2025. He had a QBR of 18.9, the worst single-season QBR in Cleveland Browns history for a QB with at least 6 starts.

They can pick Ty Simpson in the 2026 NFL draft, but there's no proof that he might succeed in the NFL. Given all that Cabot believes, Browns could have invested more in Malik Willis. But did the former Green Bay Packers QB have that kind of talent?

Willis was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the 3rd round (86th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. After his 2 seasons as the backup QB, the Titans traded him to the Packers in 2024. His role also didn't change as he served as the backup.

In all his seasons, he has thrown for 1,322 yards and 6 touchdowns. But he has played only as a backup. Despite that fact, the people on the podcast wanted the Browns to invest in Willis and even criticized the Browns as well.

Dan Labbe, who was also on the podcast, agreed with Cabot, saying that given the Browns' QB room, they could have gone for Willis.

"I think like, that's the kind of quarterback room that, like, I'm not saying people are going to get fired next year, but that's the type of quarterback room that if people get fired next year. You look back at it, and you'd say, man, they really should have put a little more effort  into that."

The Browns' QB room does have some serious question marks over it. Shedeur Sanders has yet to prove himself. Dillon Gabriel won only 1 game as the starting QB despite playing 6. Deshaun Watson has a Browns career riddled with injuries.
