Browns Get Double QB Boost After Todd Monken's Roster Decision
Head coach Todd Monken’s silence on the starting quarterback position after the league’s most exhausting starter shuffle resulted in more questions.
But the latest development, amidst a tight cap space, might give the franchise the respite it has been looking for.
As per Monken’s latest admission, the Browns are witnessing an open competition between Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel for the starting quarterback position.
Monken alluded that there is no forerunner, and that the management has its eyes on the 2026 Draft and free agents.
“I'm excited about Shedeur, excited about Deshaun and Dillon. I’m excited about the prospects, not only in free agency but also in the draft and we'll see where it all falls,” Monken said.

“I think it's an open competition. I mean, I don't why it wouldn't be an open competition. I don't mean that saying it harshly, but I don't think there's enough on film over the last couple years one way or the other to say, boy, we have our starter at quarterback yet. Whether internally or externally,” he added.
The Browns have consistently ended at the bottom of the charts, and the last two seasons were among the worst in their recent history. They finished with a 4-12 record in the 2024 season and a 5-12 record in the 2025 season.
Moreover, the franchise has gone through more than 11 quarterbacks in the last five years alone. And yet, they still haven’t found their franchise quarterback. While the existing players are contesting for the position, the management is also looking at outside options while dealing with tight cap space.
And the Browns Still Have Two Options to Choose From
The Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders are expected to release Kyler Murray and Geno Smith, respectively.
The possibility of both players signing contracts that offer a low base salary is strong. Afterall, Smith and Murray, double-threat quarterbacks, had guaranteed contracts with their respective teams.
In the last season, Smith recorded 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions for 3,025 yards. And Murray threw six touchdowns for 962 yards. Considering their contracts and performances, the Browns can sign Smith and Murray for the league minimum value, too.
But how these probabilities pan out remains unknown. What are your opinions on this development? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
