Browns Fans Make Feelings Known After Latest Free Agent Signing
The Browns have added veteran safety Daniel Thomas, but the move is drawing a mixed response from the Dawg Pound. While some praise the depth signing, others are questioning the team's focus on defense over a struggling offense.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported this development on X, “Former #Lions and #Jaguars safety and special teamer Daniel Thomas is signing with the #Browns, source says,” Rapoport’s post read.
The 27-year-old safety has appeared in six seasons and played in 83 games so far. Thomas has recorded 94 tackles, an interception, one fumble recovery, and three passes defended.
The Jaguars picked Thomas in the 2020 draft, and he spent five seasons with them before moving to the Lions in 2025.
In the past season, Thomas started two games and made 23 tackles and defended two passes. However, his time at the Lions never really brought him success. In Week 3, he battled an injury that forced him to the sidelines. By the time he returned in Week 10, he would be limited to a rotational player.
Under this post, some fans pointed out his performances and called it a good move on the Browns’ part. But others were upset that the team picked a safety instead of focusing on the offensive unit.
The Unit Needs All the Support It Can Get, and One Fan Agreed Despite Some Doubts
“Only 111 defensive snaps on last year. Good they signed some special team help- but have to think he’s competing to be the 3rd nickel safety next year,” the fan reacted.
This reaction refers to the Browns' depth chart and where Thomas might fit in. According to a report by the Browns Wire, the team is 'likely set with Grant Delpit and Ronnie Hickman as their starters,' leaving Thomas as a backup. So would this signing be worthwhile for the parties involved?
Some believe it would. One fan wrote, “The Browns are quietly filling roster spots with veterans who know how to play multiple roles, bruv. Low noise move, but the depth building in Cleveland this offseason is worth paying attention to.”
But two fans were concerned about the offensive unit. One comment mentioned how the team hasn’t declared whether Shedeur Sanders or Deshaun Watson would become QB1.
And one X user simply wrote, “The Browns need a slightly competent offense to be playoff caliber.”
“Lions → Jaguars → now Cleveland? Bro’s been a return-team nightmare for years, and suddenly he’s rocking orange and brown. While everyone’s arguing about the QB room, Cleveland’s quietly stacking veteran safeties like it’s a side quest nobody noticed.”
While the Dawg Pound is mostly happy with this decision, what are your thoughts? Share them in the comments.
