Browns Experts Warn Off Shedeur Sanders & Deshaun Watson After Todd Monken Statement

Despite starting four different quarterbacks in the 2025 season, the Cleveland Browns still haven't decided on their primary quarterback.
Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson are frontrunners, but they are also in doubt.
At the 2026 NFL Combine, Todd Monken said that the answer to the Browns QB questions "could be externally." Based on this, Andy Baskin & Jeff Phelps of Cleveland's Talking Heads made some comments on the frontrunners at 92.3 The Fan.
Phelps said, "I do think he's given us a little bit more food for thought. And then yet again, Andy, how did he finish his Dillon Gabriel comment? Well, and we're not opposed to looking outside."
Andy also chimed in, saying that they have kept doors open for an external quarterback.
Phelps then went on to warn Sanders and Watson. "And that's good. I don't think there's any question that's a good thing. But boy, if you're one of those three guys, you've been put on notice," he said.
What makes the warning more dangerous is Sanders' and Watson's performance.
Shedeur Sanders had a passer rating of 68.1 with 1,400 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 8 games in 2025. He was sacked 23 times, and the OL wasn't the only one responsible for that. The 24-year-old took so much time throwing the ball.
Deshaun Watson, on paper, is the best QB they have, but not for the Browns. The 3x Pro Bowler has a passer rating of 80.7 with 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 19 games for the Franchise. Plus his history with injuires make him a very sensitive case.
And it's not Todd Monken alone who has talked about an external QB.
"I think there's always the possibility. But we have a long way to go before we get to that point. So, we expect to have a competitive room, like that's going to be important to us," Andrew Berry said when asked about the same.
So, Who Could Replace Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson?
Malik Willis is one name that Insiders have linked to the Browns. He has thrown for 1,322 yards and 6 touchdowns in 22 career games. In 2022, he signed a 4-year, $5.16 M rookie deal with the Tennessee Titans.
Though they traded him to the Green Bay Packers in 2024. There, he served as the backup for Jordan Love, but the contract will end before the 2026 season, making him a free agent.
What do you think about him? Would you take him over Shedeur Sanders and Desahun Watson as the Browns QB1 in 2026? Or do you have some other name with you? Let us know in the comments.
