“Bring back Baker Mayfield”: Browns superfan pleads for QB’s return amid Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson battle
As the Browns' quarterback situation featuring Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson continues to raise more questions than answers, one outspoken superfan has sparked fresh debate with a bold plea to bring back former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.
During a recent episode of the Sports4CLE show on Cleveland.com's YouTube channel, fans were asked which player Browns fans would like to see playing for the team again. One fan was enthusiastic and absolutely sure of his choice.
“Without a doubt, Baker Mayfield. He's going to become a free agent. Let me say it again: Baker Mayfield. He's tough, he moves forward, and he's the guy we should bring back. Forget everybody else. Bring back Baker Mayfield,” said the fan in a voice message.

While fans want him back, NFL insider Jeff Lloyd believes that a reunion is unlikely because Mayfield clashed with Cleveland's top management, and some of those people are still with the organization.
" So, you know, I don't know necessarily that'd be a reunion that would ever happen,” said Lloyd on Cleveland.com's YouTube channel on July 9.
Mayfield played through a torn labrum in 2021, which hurt his numbers. Months later, at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, Browns GM Andrew Berry informed his agent that the team was exploring other quarterback options.
This led to Mayfield's relationship with the front office souring, and eventually, the QB asked the team to release him.
Mayfield was traded by the Browns when Deshaun Watson arrived in 2022, but the decision hasn't worked out. Watson has struggled with injuries and inconsistency since then, leaving the Browns without a reliable starting quarterback since Mayfield's departure.
The Browns certainly made a mistake by giving up on Baker Mayfield too soon. However, they are unlikely to make the same mistake again, as one NFL analyst believes the front office might have learned their lesson.
Is Cleveland’s next Baker Mayfield already on the roster?
Baker Mayfield may have been the Browns' last true quarterback. With Watson reportedly in his final season, one insider believes the Browns should back Shedeur Sanders.
“Clearly, the Browns got the evaluation part right, and that could still be the case with Sanders or their next rookie quarterback,” wrote Ernesto Cova of Dawg Pound Daily.
Picked by the Browns as the No. 1 overall pick in 2018, Mayfield started 59 of 60 games across four seasons. When he left, he had a passer rating of 87.8 and had thrown for 14,125 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions in 60 games.
"But as we've seen time and time again, scouting is just the beginning, and development is what can actually make or break a player's career. Mayfield, like many other quarterbacks, was a late bloomer," Cova added.
The analyst believes the Browns shouldn't make the same mistake they did withMayfield and should instead be patient with Shedeur Sanders, or any other rookie, rather than moving on from them too quickly.
That said, what are your opinions on Baker Mayfield? Let us know in the comments.
