Brandon Aiyuk admits feeling helpless in scathing accusation against NFLPA
Brandon Aiyuk's contract saga with the 49ers has taken another twist. What began as a battle for freedom in San Francisco has now drawn the NFLPA into the spotlight after his latest confession.
The controversy escalated on Sunday when Aiyuk, through his Instagram Story, accused the NFLPA of withholding information from him.
“When members of the union that is in place to help players are lying/withholding information from a player on behalf of the team alongside a certified agent. That’s some straight B*!!!” wrote Aiyuk, per OurSF49ers X account on June 29.
The wide receiver's remarks cast doubts over how the NFLPA managed information concerning his former agent, Ryan Williams of Athletes First. Williams' contract with Aiyuk was terminated last Saturday.
“Some players have no other place to go for information or help, and are relying on the union to help them continue advancing in their careers and lives!' Aiyuk wrote in his Instagram story. "I’m sure there are great members of the union, so this message does not pertain to them, but about the ones in my specific case.”
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Aiyuk argued that Williams was central to his case because he also represents 49ers GM John Lynch, which is a direct conflict of interest.
The WR claims that despite his terminating his Standard Representation Agreement through the NFLPA last November, the union's database continued listing Williams as his active representative.
Aiyuk believes that the NFLPA might be working with the 49ers. NBC reporter Mike Florio, however, dismissed that notion entirely.
"That's just ridiculous. The NFL Players Association doesn't operate that way," Florio insisted in his June 28 report.
While the NFLPA is yet to respond to his accusations, another NFL insider has explained that Aiyuk is in a very difficult position
Jeremy Fowler believes Brandon Aiyuk is burning money
Aiyuk is certainly in a pretty bad position, as the 49ers have already voided his 2026 guarantees after he stopped attending rehab. This is making the standoff increasingly costly for him.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on NFL Live that Aiyuk has not even filed the paperwork needed to remove himself from the reserve/left squad list.
“He's lighting money on fire is what he's doing every time he puts an Instagram video out right now. So he is on the left squad list for the 49ers still. To get off that list, he has to apply to Commissioner Roger Goodell. He has to file paperwork. I'm told that hasn't happened,” said Fowler.
The ESPN reporter argued that Aiyuk is certainly “untradeable right now.” He added that he had conversations with league insiders, who revealed that even “if he[Aiyuk] gets cut, that he might have to sign a bit minimum deal somewhere because of how all this has gone.”
All routes to the Washington Commanders appear to be closing for Aiyuk. And with the season fast approaching, his future remains in limbo.
