Bills Owner Takes Major Call Over GM Brandon Beane’s Future Following Sean McDermott’s Firing
A major shakeup is underway in Buffalo. Following a disappointing playoff exit, the team has reportedly parted ways with its long-time head coach.
Now, all eyes are on owner Terry Pegula's next move and what it means for the franchise's future.
On Monday, they fired former head coach Sean McDermott after they lost 33-30 to Bo Nix’s Denver Broncos in the playoffs.
As McDermott parted ways after nine seasons, Terry Pegula, the franchise owner, promoted general manager Brandon Beane to the position of President of Football Operations. Pegula has made Beane in charge of finding the Bills' new head coach.
In his statement announcing McDermott’s dismissal, Pegula clarified that the franchise needed a new leader who would make the Bills a winning franchise and give their fans an opportunity to celebrate.
“Sean has done an [admirable] job of leading our football team the past nine seasons. Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and was instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial playoff team,” Pegula stated.
“But I feel we are in a need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe that to our players and to Bills Mafia.”
Beane's Contribution to The Bills
As their general manager, Beane brought in talent for the Bills and built a roster based on the franchise's demand. Earlier, he was responsible for building contracts and fixing salary caps.
Beane picked MVP Josh Allen in 2017 and was under fire for it. But that paid off well. He also picked the likes of cornerback Taron Johnson and offensive tackle Spencer Brown.
He also scouted Von Miller and Joey Bosa from the Rams and the Chargers, respectively.
However, with the new role, Beane will oversee all operations and supervise the coaching staff, too.
SB Nation's Matt Warren argued that with McDermott as the head coach, many players Beane scouted were underutilized. Hopefully, with his newfound control, Beane strengthens the Bills even more.
Who Will Replace McDermott Next?
According to writer Jacob Camenker, the Bills' offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, is a good candidate. Because of him, the team was ranked third in terms of total EPA per play with 0.12.
Meanwhile, Brian Daboll, the New York Giants' former head coach, who previously worked as the Bills' offensive coordinator for four years, is also an option.
How do you think the Bills and Beane will fare under these new changes? Tell us in the comments.
