Bills HC shares interesting Josh Allen detail that affected franchise’s gameplan

In a candid conversation, Buffalo Bills head coach Joe Brady shared how deeply involved Josh Allen is. He credited the star quarterback with initiating conversations about the team’s game plan.

“With regard to Josh, like it's one thing to call a play; it’s another thing for the guy to have the confidence in the play and actually make a decision to make it work, right? And I love when he comes to me with ideas,” he told Matt Parrino in an episode of Shout! Buffalo Bills podcast.

The new HC, who is the youngest in the league at 36, revealed that the coaches have built on his suggestions. In answering this fan’s question, Brady also commented on the confidence with which  Allen speaks of his ideas.

These comments followed the Bills’ mandatory minicamp. He shared what it is like to have the 2024 MVP walk in with an idea to influence the offense. This also reveals what the partnership between Brady, the Bills' former offensive coordinator, and Allen looks like.

“It sparks conversation. And there’s been plenty of instances where we’ll run a play that was initially sparked by him. Whether it has success or whether it doesn’t, him continuing to bring ideas and feel confident, it’s his offense,” he said on June 17.

The Bills picked Allen as the seventh overall pick in 2018. The 30-year-old has thrown over 220 passing touchdowns for 30,102 passing yards. He holds an 8-7 postseason record but is title-less.

One of the most dominant players, Allen is a dual-threat quarterback. His presence on drawing boards hints at an elite understanding of the game.

“His input is critical for us.”

Sports Illustrated has called Allen the best Bills’ quarterback since Jim Kelly. While there are similarities between the two- strong postseason record but no Super Bowl title- they recently ranked Allen.

Where is Josh Allen among his modern counterparts?

To understand how good Josh Allen is, Buffalo Bills on Sports Illustrated pointed to his impressive stats. In comparison to 28 modern-era quarterbacks, Allen ranks first in:

Total yards per game (272.05)

Total touchdowns per game (2.34)

Passer Rating (94.4)

Interception Percentage (2.3%)

Total Yards (34,823)

Rushing Touchdowns (79)

and Rushing Yards (4,721).

It is important to note that the modern era spans many years and has deeper implications.

“It also means there were many different “eras” of football, with the league currently in an offensive-centric era where passing is king,” Randy Gurzi wrote.

Gurzi then praised Allen for not just his prolific passing but for carrying the offense on his rushing too. To him, Allen is “arguably” the NFL’s greatest dual-threat QB. However, the absence of a Lombardi Trophy is glaring.

Will this season change that? What are your thoughts?
