Bernie Kosar Drops Major Health Update Months After Liver Transplant

The former Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar is fighting another battle off the field. On Saturday, he took to social media to announce a new procedure.

“Going a little to hard. Found my way back into the hospital," said Kosar in a video he posted on Facebook and X. "Lets get this procedure over with and have a winning day. See you next week."

Bernie Kosar was diagnosed with liver failure and Parkinson's disease back in 2024. He underwent a life-saving liver transplant in November last year. Since then, he has been experiencing some health complications leading to repeated hospitalization.

Kosar didn’t share any details regarding his hospitalization or the procedure. Before this, he was admitted to a hospital in December 2025 due to E. Coli food poisoning.

He was back again in early January because of a complication, which he described as a small rejection by his body of the liver transplant.

The former quarterback of the Browns received a liver from Bryce Dunlap (21) of North Olmstead, who unexpectedly passed away due to complications from an anoxic brain injury. The Dunlap family made this direct donation when they heard of Kosar’s critical state.

Kosar thanked the Dunlap family for the “great gift” on Facebook, and the video was later played at the stadium for the Dunlaps.

“I can’t even begin to share how appreciative I am for the gift I received from Bryce Dunlap,” said Kosar. “Everyone, please get on your feet, make some noise and show some support for my hero, Bryce.”

The family was later honored at the start of the Browns’ last home game in December 2025. Bryce’s mother, Kimberly Dunlap Kane, served as the Browns’ Dawg Pound Captain in the final home game.

Fans and well-wishers have stayed up to date on Kosar’s health via social media and were hoping to see him get better.

It looks like his health has hit a temporary setback, but Kosar is determined to recover and has kept himself busy with sporting events.

Before his health complications, in his prime, Kosar had a successful 12-year NFL career.

Bernie Kosar’s 12-year-long NFL journey

Bernie Kosar helped the Miami Hurricanes win their first national title in 1983, and two years later, he entered the NFL with the team and position he always wanted: quarterback for the Browns.

Kosar was with the Browns from 1985 to 1993. He was with the Dallas Cowboys in 1993 and secured a Super Bowl win with them. He then shifted to the Miami Dolphins and was with them from 1994 to 1996.

Kosar finally retired from the game in 1996. In all his 12 seasons with the Browns, Cowboys, and Dolphins, he threw 23,301 yards and 124 touchdowns.
