Bad News for Shedeur Sanders as NFL Insider Links Cleveland Browns to Potential Replacement

In the 2025 season, the Cleveland Browns started four different quarterbacks, which really signifies their struggles to find the right man to lead the franchise.

Since the season ended, the Browns have been looking for someone who could compete with Shedeur Sanders for the QB1 position. And maybe they have found it.

The hunt has been going on for a while, and NFL Insider Mary Kay Cabot says that the Browns have at least two external quarterback options on their radar.

“Packers backup quarterback Malik Willis and Alabama’s Ty Simpson are among the external quarterbacks on the Browns’ radar with the NFL Combine kicking off Tuesday and free agency starting in two weeks.”

Willis signed a 4-year, $5.16 M rookie deal with the Titans in 2022 and was traded to the Packers in 2024, serving as backup for Jordan Love. The contract will end in the coming months, and he will be a free agent.

He comes with experience of throwing for 1,322 yards and 6 touchdowns in 22 career games.

The other option, Ty Simpson, offers a different kind of prospect. The Alabama quarterback is a younger, developmental talent who could be targeted with the No. 24 overall pick.

He piled up big passing and rushing numbers at Tennessee before becoming Alabama’s full-time starter in 2025. As a redshirt junior, Simpson threw for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions over 15 games as Alabama's starting quarterback.

But while these options seem exciting, the question arises: are these the best options for the Browns?

There are Some Roadblocks With them replacing Shedeur Sanders

The rumor is that the Browns must offer Malik Willis $20 million to have him on the team. However, as per Deshaun Watson's contract, the Browns must pay him $46 million (base salary) in 2026. Moreover, Wills has been a backup mostly.

He had one game as a starter this past season, which was against the Ravens on December 27. The Packers lost it 24-41 on the scorecard. In 2025, he had a passer rating of 145.5 with 422 yards and 3 touchdowns in 4 games.

Interestingly, the same goes for Simpson.

For his first three seasons, Simpson served mostly as a backup, first behind Bryce Young and later behind Jalen Milroe. What's even more thought-provoking is why the Browns would bring a developmental QB when they still have Shedeur Sanders?
