However, Watson recently defended his performance and expressed his frustration over the media criticism. This earned the ire of ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith.

Smith argued that Watson should welcome football-related criticism given everything surrounding his career. On First Take, Stephen A. delivered a particularly blunt assessment of the Browns quarterback.

“Deshaun Watson, in Cleveland, you have been awful. And if you were to get arrested for being awful, I would have knocked it. I said it months ago. I'm going to say it again. It has been very, very bad. But I'm going to tell you how you just made it worse. Awful is one thing. Stupid is another.”

Smith made clear that he was criticizing Watson’s actions rather than personally calling him stupid. He then explained why he believes Watson should be grateful that the current conversation is focused solely on his football performance and not some of his other questionable actions.

Smith’s criticism adds another layer to the pressure already surrounding Watson. With Cleveland needing better results, the quarterback will have to let his performances provide the response.

Deshaun Watson Has Been Given a Long Leash by Browns Coaching Staff

Watson’s position remains relatively secure for now, with Cleveland’s coaching staff reportedly prepared to give him a long leash. Todd Monken has repeatedly backed the decision to keep Watson ahead of rookie Shedeur Sanders.

That patience gives Watson time to improve, but it also places greater responsibility on the veteran quarterback. If the Browns continue struggling, the pressure surrounding his performances will only intensify.

For now, Watson has another opportunity to answer his critics on the field. His performances over the coming weeks could ultimately determine how long that leash remains.
