Andrew Berry Offers Harsh Reality Check to Veteran CB Over Browns Future

Apr 6, 2026, 11:00 AM CUT

A key defense player may not be returning to the Cleveland Browns.  After cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. ruptured his Achilles tendon in training camp last year, he missed the season entirely.

General manager Andrew Berry talked about the 26-year-old. He wants to have Emerson back, but his current state does not permit the Browns to take any chances.

“Love MJ. Absolutely love MJ., both as a person and as a player. Selfishly, I would love to have him back. I think we’re also realistic that with MJ and the injury that he’s coming off of, to reach his personal goals, he’s also got to be in a position where he has maybe a strong opportunity to compete for a starting spot. But certainly if that changes in terms of (opportunity), we’d love to have him back.”

Emerson’s fate is heartbreaking. Not only was he absent in the final year of his contract, but also because it was an incredible one for the Browns’ defense. The franchise allowed 22.3 points per game and forced 28 turnovers. Out of the 53 total sacks, defensive end Myles Garrett recorded 23.

Fans missed out on Emerson’s performance, who was guaranteed to do well given his track record. Since 2022, he has recorded 202 tackles in the 50 games he played. Emerson had 202 tackles, 1 sack, 34 passes defended, and 4 interceptions.

Despite the role he has played in the Browns since his debut, Emerson is a reminder of how NFL teams cannot wait. And Berry’s latest admission has left unanswered questions over Emerson’s future.

Where Does Emerson Jr. Go From Here

Emerson completed a four-year $5.47 million rookie contract with the Browns. The contract included a $1.16 million signing bonus and guaranteed $1.16 million. While his Browns return is “unsettled”, Emerson is an otherwise unsigned free agent.

Although the Browns were an undisputed success on defense, they had to take chances with replacing Emerson, who was recovering. Greg Newsome II replaced him until the Browns traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars in October.

The Browns received Tyson Campbell in return for Newsom, and he performed well as a secondary cornerback. In 5 games, he made 29 tackles and 6 passes defended. So, even if Emerson wants to return to the Browns, he would have to prove himself better than Campbell.

Will the Browns take a chance? Berry has hinted no. What are your thoughts?
